Hershy Farms was established in 2020 by Spencer Herchenbach after he graduated with a Degree in Agricultural Systems Technology from Iowa State University. Spencer grew up raising cattle and growing crops in Lake and Mchenry County on his family farm. His family has been farming since the 1850s.
Hershy Farms started feeding steers in 2020 and has continued to grow the business since. Alongside the cattle business, we also operate several hundred tillable acres to sustain the cattle with responsibly grown feeds.
At Hershy Farms, our mission is to provide our customers with the freshest, highest quality meat products. You can find our meat products at Bull Valley Farm Country Store. We also encourage customers to reach out if they are interested in purchasing a half or whole steer!
Please reach us at hershyfarms@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Hershy Farms charges based on the live weight of the animal. For example, if the live market value of a steer is $2.00 per pound at the time and the weight of the steer is 1,200 pounds, then a half steer would cost you $1,200.
Processing is not included in the cost of the animal. There is a separate charge for processing that is paid when you pick up your frozen beef. The cost to process a half steer is typically between $300 and $400 depending on the complexity of your cut-up instructions. For example, having hamburger patties made is typically an extra expense.
We use Eickman's Processing Co. in Seward, IL and Heritage Country Meats in Jefferson, WI for custom processing.
Our steers typically finish out between 1200-1300 pounds on average.
You can expect to receive 200-250 pounds of meat from a half steer depending on the animal.
The custom processor will get ahold of you when it comes time to select which cuts you like. During that time, they will run you through a cut-sheet like so (Heritage Country Meats and Eickman's Processing Co.).
Our cows are on pasture during the spring and summer months. In the fall and winter months, they are fed natural hay that was baled throughout the previous year. They are also given a blend of minerals year round, which were hand selected by the nutritionist we work closely with.
Our steers are fed a total mixed ration (TMR). The TMR we feed is derived from the same nutritionist to keep our steers healthy and happy throughout their life. It includes a blend of mostly forages (like corn silage and hay) and some grains as well (like corn and distiller's). They also have the option, like the cows, to indulge in a similar selection of minerals.
Feel free to reach out with any further questions!
